Happy 79th birthday to Garth Hudson of The Band who was born on 8/2/37. Along with Robbie Robertson as one of two original surviving members of The Band, Hudson provided new sonic textures unheard of in the rock setting and with his array of keyboards provided the curation backbone to The Band’s brilliant roots rock. Hudston has been a much-in-demand and respected session musician and still has that big beard. Watch Hudson lay down his solo organ intro on this 1983 live version of “Chest Fever” – this lineup of The Band didn’t feature Robbie Robertson, but did feature Helm, Manuel and Danko from the original lineup.
