Happy 81st birthday today to vocal legend Mavis Staples who was born on 7/10/39. The singer noted for her rhythm and blues and gospel chops along with being a prominent civil rights activist. She recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers who scored two No.1 singles, ‘I’ll Take You There’ and ‘Let’s Do It Again’. Staples has also enjoyed a career renaissance in the last decade with a number of solo albums produced by Jeff Tweedy and her most recent release – 2019’s We Get By, produced by Ben Harper.
