Ten Years Ago Today -The Claypool Lennon Delirium Release Debut Album ‘Monolith of Phobos’

Ten years ago today (6/3/16), The Claypool Lennon Delirium released their debut album, Monolith of Phobos. Composed of Sean Lennon and Les Claypool, the debut served as a retro-inspired psychedelic space rock record that draws heavily on the early sound of Pink Floyd. Named after the mysterious “Monolith of Phobos” rock formation on Mars’ moon, the record opens with a strong run of atmospheric, cosmic tracks, including the title song and the two-part “Cricket and the Genie,” blending dreamy melodies, adventurous arrangements, and Claypool’s distinctive bass work. Highlights such as “Captain Lariat,” “Ohmerica,” “Boomerang Baby,” and the closing pair “Bubbles Burst” and “There’s No Underwear in Space” feature psychedelic textures, quirky lyrics, Eastern influences, and explorations of modern anxieties. The duo would make another record in 2019 (South of Reality), before 2026’s ambitious double album The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy.
