Sure it ain’t Passover, but we’ve got four questions for you anyway…

1. What was your single favorite musical experience of 2006?

2. What band are you most excited to see in 2007?

3. What under-the-radar band didn’t get nearly enough buzz this year?

4. While everyone focuses on the “best of” this time of year, we want to know, what was the worst live musical performance you caught in 2006?

We’ll keep this up at the top for a couple days…weigh in accordingly.

  1. 1. With much love to Tea Leaf Green at CBGB, Greyboy Allstars at Irving, Roger Waters at MSG, Beck at the Theater @ MSG and The Jammys, nothing beats the evening of August 28th, when Bustle In Your Hedgerow tore the Hudson a new one. Sure it’s strange that I’d choose a glorified cover band playing unoriginal music as my top show of the year, but as an overall experience — the boat, the crowd, the energy — I’d take this night over just about any other. I felt like I got to see a SICK band play a house party…on a boat. A houseboat party, I guess.

    2. Having crossed off a whole bunch this year, Rose Hill Drive and Hampton Comes Unglued take the new top spots (As I’ve said this week)

    3. Even though The Benevento/Russo Duo released a solid album and played with two Phish legends for a tour this year, I still can’t fathom how they haven’t catapulted onto the national stage. The fact that they can still play for 300-500 people a night in their own hometown is criminal. I still consider them under-the-radar, until people outside New York and Phantasy Tour know their names.

    4. Slightly Stoopid — I went to see TLG, Bela, Mule and Yonder open the DMBfest at Randall’s Island this summer, and we were unfortunately treated to an hour of Slightly Stoopid. The fact that these guys earn a paycheck for doing something a handful of Special Olympians could pull off makes me sad for the state of modern music.

  2. Questions 2 & 3 are easy Dr. Dog! They put out a stellar EP a few months back and a new full length is due next month. These guys are going to blow up this year.

Worst live musical performance I’m going to have to go with Joanna Newsome opening for Neko Case at McCarren Pool. Yeah I know the hipster love her, but it was just plain terrible. There was nothing fun about a chick with a high pitched voice playing 11 plus minute songs on a harp. Sorry.

Favorite musical experience probably The Boss at MSG with The Seeger Session Band. Damn that was a great show and the place wasn’t even sold out.

  3. 1. Without a doubt the Warren Haynes X-Mas Jam. Coming a close second is The Flaming Lips at Wakarusa. Both unique and unforgetable experiences.

    2. Who knows. I’d say Phish, but that’s not gonna happen.

    3. I would say Michael Franti & Spearhead. With a fantastic new CD, a documentary DVD, book and extensive tour I’m surprised they didn’t get more press or acclaim. The YELL FIRE! CD is the best effort they’ve ever produced and that DVD is a real eye opener.

    4. This one is easy… The Brazilian Girls. First, not Brazilian, second, only one girl. And they didn’t even try. Their albums sound good. Maybe I caught them on an off night. Also highly dissapointed in the security situation that unfolded at Wakarusa. Although not directly music related it almost ruined a great weekend.

PEACE OUT & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

  4. 1. Greyboy Allstars @ Irving Plaza

    2. Arcade Fire
    3. Levon Helm
    4. ???

  5. 1- My Morning Jacket @ Tabernacle in Atlanta…easily the best rock band touring. Jim James posesses the 5 crucial qualities for greatness: excellent songwriting, chops on his instrument, amazing voice, dynamic stage presence/performer, and good in the studio.

    2- see #1

3- tie: Spam Allstars, The Codetalkers

4- Portastatic- saw them open for Wilco in Athens, GA…horrible indie pop music, and crappy performers. Made Wilco seem like gods that night(which I think they are anyway).

  6. 1. GRAB playing Uncle Albert at Hartford put the icing on the best cake i’ve had all year. honorable mentions: Umphrey’s at Pines, Beck/Spank Rock Jersey City
    2. My Morning Jacket
    3. Ryan Montbleau Band
    4. Keller Williams Langerado set was rough

  7. 1. My Morning Jacket @ Roseland/ 1A. Broken Social Scene @ Webster Hall

    2. The Arcade Fire

    3. Brother’s Past

    4. Pearl Jam @ Meadowlands (not because of the band, but the venue was hands down the worst sound I have ever experienced at a show.)

  8. 1. TEA LEAF GREEN @ High Noon Saloon in Madison
    2. The reincarnation of Phish..just kidding…I’ll go with My Morning Jacket
    3.Centro-matic
4.Some terrible rock band at Robstock….TERRIBLE I TELL YOU! and lets not forget that maybe The Rave in Milwaukee could get a new sound system.

  9. 1. Radiohead at the Bank of America Pavilion in Boston- just an unbelievable set list, no two songs sound alike

    2. Phish (I can hope). If not, then Umphrey’s Mcgee.

    3. The Black Keys

    4. Didn’t go to enough shows to have had one.

  10. 1. Umphrey’s McGee-South Bend

    2. GENESIS

    3. The Slip

    4. Marc Broussard-hands down the biggest fucking joke of a pussy I have ever fucking seen in my life. this guy makes tampons look masculine. why the fuck he ever got asked to play with ringers like Bela Fleck and Umphrey’s I will never know. did i mention he was a pussy.

  11. 1. My Morning Jacket/Joe & Marco/The Slip @ Electric Factory 12/1

    2. Phish… joking, joking, I’m psyched to check out Midlake.

    3. Earl Greyhound

    4. Bill Frisell show w/ Petra Haden & Kelly Jo Phelps on 6/24 @ Symphony Space, sometimes it’s the guys you love the most that let you down the hardest… I love me some Frisell, but this show just blew.

  12. 1. This is a very hard question. Jammy,s, Panic at Radio City, Steely Dan, Roger Waters at MSG, Billy Joels Banner raising 12th show, or the first one at MSG, Keller Williams Incident at Vegoose, but I would go with the String Cheese Incident Late Night at Vegoose. Just a fantastic evening to top off an incredible weekend.

2.Everyone Answers would be PHISH (If they were playing) but I am very excited about Umphrey’s McGee. I think they got alot of potential to be a fantastic great Jam Band. I also love the Cheese, so I hope they find a way to continue.

    3. Yonder Mountain String Band or the Duo

    4. Ha, I love this question? I dont know or I cannot rememember it was so bad. Trey?

  13. 1) Radiohead at the Auditorium Theatre. They sound so big even a 4000 person room is intimate.

    2) LCD Soundsystem. Umphrey’s McGee. Radiohead.

    3) Brightblack Morning Light. Somehow their album got lost in the shuffle of 2006

    4) Gnarls Barkley at the Riviera. The sound was so poor it was painful. and everyone just seemed like they had been going through the same motions for 5 months. I couldn’t get into any part of the show. GRAB Chicago was definitely the biggest disappointment. I wanted so badly to get into the show, I tried, I did. But that show had zero momentum, zero energy, and the playing never really gelled. Let Me Lie as a song choice after Becky…I’ve never seen my gf so pissed off at a concert before…HA!

  14. 1) G. Love and Special Sauce (with Marc Broussard opening) at the 9:30 Club, WDC November 16
    2) Bonerama (New Orleans funk, for those who don’t yet know, http://www.bonerama.net)
    3) BONERAMA
    4) didn’t love the North Mississippi Allstars…

  15. 1. Gorillaz at The Appollo, Harlem, NYC

    2. One I haven’t heard of yet…

    3. Scotty Hard’s Radical Reconstructive Surgery (with John Medeski & Matthew Shipp)

Trio Beyond (Jack DeJohnette, Larry Goldings, and John Scofield)

    e.s.t. (Esbjörn Svensson Trio)

    10 Ft. Ganja Plant

    4. The second and 3rd shows in my life that were so bad I had to leave early:
Tea Leaf Green at Toad’s Place, New Haven, CT
GRAB at The Meadow’s, Hartford, CT
