Whether you worship it or think it’s overrated hippie nonsense, chances are you’ve got some story related to the Grateful Dead’s 5/8/77 show at Cornell University, most likely about your First Bootleg Tape Ever.
We’re all well aware you’re heady enough to know the nights before and after were just as good if not better, but let’s take a moment for the 8th today.
And in honor of the 30-year anniversary of this newb-lovin’ show — remember, Ithaca recently turned this one into a holiday of sorts — feel free to take a step back and stream this badboy ’til you’re contented beyond reproach.

One of me and my friend’s favorite part of 5/8/77 is during “Take a step back” when Jerry implores the audience not to “move back” but simply to “move back SOME.” (No, you don’t need to “move back” ALL THE WAY for Captain Trips. Just “move back SOME.” Not sure why that always made us laugh.)
But thanks for the link. I listen to the show every year and call my friends. And my mother. And my mother’s friends. Have a great 5/8 day, HT. Try not to get “horribly smashed.”
And like you, I fucking love it when the crowd cheers after “horribly smashed,” as if the band says “See all these people are getting incredibly high here.” Classic.
I’m real bug-eyed right now.
