The Dexateens: Pianos’s, New York, NY 5/15/09

These Tuscaloosa, Alabama boys made their first stop in NYC a memorable one at Piano’s on the Lower East Side.  Equipped with trucker hats, pompadours, and sideburns that could cut a steak, this 5-piece blasted out the doors and invigorated a small but eager crowd.  They powered through their set with a three guitar attack and rock solid low-end that dripped hellfire an Jack Daniels.

It mattered little that most of the lyrics drowned in violent cymbal crashes.  When the harmonies kicked in, along with the Woo-Hoo-Hoo’s in "Trail," they were welcomed. The songs “Down Low” and “Neil Armstrong” showcase their chops as song writing stalwarts, but fans of the Drive-By Truckers will feel right at home with anything these teens present.  Tossing in the Different Strokes theme song in the middle of a jam was a nice touch and added a sing along party feel to the proceedings.  Extra credit should be given to John Smith, whose fret board runs stood out as exceptional, and his singing wasn’t half cooked bacon either.  So in this age of recession and depression, when The Dexateens hit your town, make sure you lace up your boots and strap on your beer, because a loud hoedown is about to be thrown down.
