GGG Review: Yuto Takes Manhattan!!!

Exhausted from the Jammys, the afterparty, and the ill-thought-out decision to work a full day after, I nevertheless dragged myself down to NYC’s Rodeo Bar last night, intent on catching at least a little of Girls, Guns & Glory—a Boston-area country-rock crew par excellence and one of the best of its kind around.

As it turned out, Yuto Miyazawa—and more specifically, Relix publisher Steve Bernstein—felt the same way. If you were at the Jammys, the afterparty, or have spent enough time looking up eight-year-old guitar phenoms on YouTube, you’re well aware Yuto is a pint-sized shredder, able to recreate Clapton, Ozzy and other meaty classics and really punish a guitar that’s bigger than he is. In a hastily arranged sit-in, Yuto joined three-fourths of a graciously accommodating GGG for Crossroads, proceeding to win over yet another wide-eyed crowd. So persuasive was he that the lovely lasses who work the Rodeo Bar’s music room started banging loudly for an encore—not just any act gets that royal treatment.

It’s great to see Yuto making the rounds all over New York—the kid’s got buzz, no doubt about it—but we’re just hoping Bernstein and his handlers let the youngster sleep once in a while. If you’re keeping score, Yuto was out not 18 hours earlier, jamming on Crazy Train with Galactic at 1:30 a.m. the previous night. Already a rock star lifestyle, Yuto!

As for GGG, you owe it to yourself to check ’em out: an invigorating, profoundly soulful quartet whose lead singer, Mass. native Ward Hayden, can slay an audience with lilting, basso profundo strains similar to a Chris Isaak or a Dwight Yoakam. The band gets tighter with every gig and it already has two albums—2007’s Pretty Little Wrecking Ball and this year’s Inverted Valentine—worthy of any country rock fan’s regular rotation. Watch these guys—they’s goin’ places.

  1. My kid is 5 years old and can only play Hot Cross Buns on guitar…I guess he needs to get a move on if he’s ever gonna catch up to Yuto.
