You know how soccer is big everywhere but America? Well, the same can be said about the bombastic and raw music of Ireland’s Thin Lizzy. Lead singin’ bass playin’ Phil Lynott wrote some of the most memorable songs of the ’70s including The Boys Are Back In Town and Bad Reputation.
My favorite Thin Lizzy tune of all-time has to be the gritty classic rock staple: Jailbreak. Whenever Team Scumbag and I want to start an evening of debauchery we start with an airing of Jailbreak to get us in the mood. As we said earlier, Thin Lizzy was huge in pretty much every English speaking country but the U.S. Check out the crowd that eats up every note as Thin Lizzy plays outside of the legendary Sydney Opera House in Australia from way back in 1978:

I feel like WEEN is keeping the spirit of Thin Lizzy alive in some of their material. Gabrielle from the Shinola LP being a notable example. Fun stuff.
just saw Jason Isbell last Saturday in Tampa. He whupped out a great cover of Jailbreak, as well as one of Psycho Killer that was equally awesome. Lizzy is highly underrated – one of the best bands of the Seventies. Black Rose, especially the title track, is one of their “lost” albums. I like it so much, I got a tat of the cover art: http://mogroith.multiply.com/photos/album/18/New_Ink#2
Great comments, everyone. Oliver – Wow! I never made that comparison in my head, but you nailed it!
If you dig Thin Lizzy, chances are you dig GnR fan too.
And if that’s the case, you’ll almost certainly enjoy this cover of Jailbreak from the “The Nightwatchman” featuring Slash, Alice in Chains, and of course Tom Morello.
Would love to have been there!
