Steely Dan kicked off the gimmicky leg of their Rent Party ’09 tour last night at the Wang Center in Boston by treating the audience to not one but two classic albums played in their entirety. Boston Dan fans already knew they would be seeing the band play all of Aja, what they didn’t know is that the group would also perform The Royal Scam in its entirety.
Dan head honchos Walter Becker and Donald Fagen recently sat for an interview with Sarah Rodman for the Boston Globe in which the reporter gave the musicians shit for not including a performance of The Royal Scam among their three shows at the Wang. After finishing Aja, Fagen announced they would play The Royal Scam thanks to Rodman’s question.
As if performing both albums wasn’t enough of a treat, the band returned for a massive five song encore that included two nods to Beantown – Boston Rag and Dirty Water. Steely Dan will return to The Wang on Friday where they’ll perform Gaucho and Saturday for Internet Request night.

It sure was a hell of a show, and a great unexpected treat from The Dan!
I normally hate Dirty Water (I am way overexposed to that song living in Boston and being a die-hard Sox fan), but I gladly made an exception last night.
Kudos to Sarah Rodman for planting the seed for this to happen!
i spent my time watching paint dry. A superior experience to Steely Dan.
STUNNING… beyond description. Fifth time I’ve seen the band and was by far the best SD show I’ve ever seen. They played Aja like you were hearing the CD…
GO!
Boston Rag is the heat.
Thanks a lot, SD. 🙁 The *only* album I love end to end is The Royal Scam. I was so chuffed that Boston was to be skipped, I didn’t buy tickets. Thanks for *NOT* announcing it and s**t-canning my chance to catch it live.
The Royal Scam, indeed. 🙁
