Now Hear This: 1959 Newport Jazz

Wolfgang’s Vault expanded their operations over the past few years from selling the contents of Bill Graham’s vault to offering streams and downloads of live music from many genres. Music fans have benefited greatly from the expansion as we can now stream for free – or download at a reasonable price – thousands of concerts that were otherwise unavailable in any form.

Wolfgang’s Vault keeps on adding exclusive concert catalogs to the Concert Vault collection including the archive of the Newport Jazz and Folks Festivals which the company purchased in 2008. According to the New York Times, the archive includes “1,000 to 1,200 individual performances, dating at least to 1955, the festival’s second year, and continuing to the end of the century. ” Last week, WV put 27 performances from the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival up for download/streaming and they sound ridiculously good.

Now, the NY Times article goes on to mention that there is some question as to who made the recordings, so the possibility exists that the recordings may get pulled at some point. Don’t miss your opportunity to hear sets from the likes of Count Basie & His Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Oscar Peterson Trio and Thelonious Monk while you still can. You can stream them for free or purchase MP3/FLACs from anywhere between $2.98 and $12.98 depending on the length of the recording.
