Phish Charleston Setlist: Night One

Phish Fall Tour 2010 moved to the East Coast for the first of two shows at the North Charleston Coliseum in North Charleston, SC this evening. The first Charleston show was more song-oriented [28 songs total] than past gigs on this tour and included a guest spot from keyboardist Page McConnell’s father – and one of the inventors of Tylenol – Dr. Jack McConnell.

The first set had a particularly old school start with a Punch You In The Eye opener followed by Possum and then a Bathtub Gin that had a blissful peak featuring fretboard fireworks courtesy of guitarist Trey Anastasio. Next, Trey took to the mic and introduced Dr. Jack who sang and tap danced along on Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home? The South Carolina resident previously sang Bill Bailey in public with Phish five times including a Father’s Day performance at SPAC on June 20, 2004. While Destiny was botched, again, a set-ending sequence that featured Stash, Joy, Buffalo Bill, Dog Faced Boy and Run Like An Antelope put an exclamation on the near 90-minute set.

Down With Disease kept up the 3.0 trend of opening the second set with a big jam song on most nights. Prince Caspian slowed things down a bit before a hard-rocking Twist that might have been the highlight of the set. Charleston night one also saw the second performance of the Anastasio/Green tune My Problem Right There, a take on the Ween classic Roses Are Free and a Mike’ Groove that featured a Horse > Silent and Mexican Cousin filling. There was no let down in energy at the end of the concert as Suzy Greenberg and Slave to the Traffic Light ended the second set, while Character Zero served as the encore.

Phish returns to the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday.
