Emilie & Ogden – 10000 (ALBUM REVIEW)

[rating=7.00]

It’s a strange title. emilieogden2Likewise, it’s not immediately clear what it might refer to. If one was a marketing guru and wanted to play off it in some strange way, there’s room to insist on 10,000 reasons to love it. Granted, that’s an exaggeration, but considering the fact that this is Emilie & Ogden’s debut, it does make for an auspicious introduction. Even though this is their first time out, Emilie & Ogden sound like they’ve been floating in the ether forever. The praise has come quickly, and for good reason. Emilie Kahn has a voice that sounds like an angel, and the accompaniment supplied by her harp — the aforementioned Ogden — is absolutely heavenly. In fact, 10,000 is a sweet, serene record, the kind of thing that effectively creates an immediate bond.

Recorded with the help of producer Jesse Mac Cormack and drummer Francis Ledoux, it makes for an impressive set of shimmering melodies draped in ethereal trappings, a sound that that projects a relaxed yet radiant glow. A word of warning however: these unassuming songs are best suited for atmospheric effect rather than aggressive listening. It’s dainty, celestial background music that’s mostly ideal for meditation, and on songs such as “Blame,” “Long Gone,” “Doser” and the rest, it’s the delicacy of the delivery that stands out most. That gives the music a rather unobtrusive presence, one that demands patience, a plaintive attitude and the need to shut out the often unavoidable intrusions of a loud and aggressive universe. Still, if given the chance, these autumnal musings will weave their spell, and ultimately make for a magical encounter.
