Film Bits: Will ‘The Beguiled’ Be the Best Film of 2017?

‘The Beguiled’ Looks Chilling and Amazing

It’s too early to call, of course, but no movie has been circling The Best Movie of 2017 quite as voraciously as The Beguiled. Sofia Coppola’s latest film certainly seems to have a lot going for it. An incredible cast, for one—including Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Kirsten Dunst—to an awe inspiring visual aesthetic. The latest trailer certainly doesn’t do much to dissuade the potential for the upcoming film. No, it looks amazing. We’ll have to wait and see, but this is a movie to put on your radar. It’s premiering at Cannes soon, so we’ll know more in the coming weeks, but if this trailer is any indication, The Beguiled is going to top end of year lists and be in heavy consideration for awards season. The Beguiled opens June 23.

Netflix Releases Full Trailer for ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Season Three

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is one of the most delightful sitcoms to come around in years. The blend of zany absurdity and heartfelt earnestness strikes a rare balance, piercing the hearts of even the most jaded of TV watchers. Thank god Netflix resurrected it after NBC gave up on it. Now, we’re about to see its third season, which finds the title character (Ellie Kemper) putting her GED to good use by going to college. The first full length trailer for the new season is heavy on the charm, which has been the bread and butter of the series so far. Of course, what ultimately makes the series are the subplots of the side characters, several of which are teased here. While not much is revealed regarding what’s ultimately in store, it’s good to know that it’s on its way. Season three premieres May 19 on Netflix.

‘Deadwood’ Inches Closer to New Life; Screenplay is Written

One of television’s greatest tragedies was the truncated run of HBO’s Deadwood. Now, it seems like it’s the latest series to get a second life. Series star Ian McShane has confirmed that creator David Milch has finally delivered a script for his filmic continuation of the dense western to the network, putting the prospects of a more Deadwood on a direct course for bearing fruit. The ball is currently in HBO’s court, but given the strong fan support, which has only grown over the 11 years since its abrupt cancellation, this seems as sure a thing as you can ever hope for. For now, consider our fingers crossed.
