Erika Wennerstrom Wins Over The Brooklyn Bowl In Support of Drive-By Truckers (SHOW REVIEW)

Smiles were plentiful last Thursday night (3/29) at Brooklyn Bowl when Erika Wennerstrom performed her stellar opening set for the Drive-By Truckers. In the first night of two shows in a row, Wennerstrom and her band (and the Truckers) left it all on stage and left the packed room with full hearts.

Decked out in a tailored royal blue suit, Wennerstrom looked powerful and strong, which was fitting given the songs off her new solo record Sweet Unknown. They are bursting with what feels like a newfound confidence and independence. Currently on hiatus from the Heartless Bastards, Wennerstrom was joined by a stellar band that made her songs soar to magnificent heights. Her stage presence had a lightness to it, like she was having the time of her life. It was the most relaxed I’ve ever seen her. She delivered memorable performances of standouts on Sweet Unknown, like “Be Good to Yourself”, “Good To Be Alone” and “Like a Bird”. Wennerstrom’s voice is still something to behold, and her message of self-love sailed through the crowd like a cool, refreshing breeze and we breathed a collective sigh of relief with her.

The Drive-By Truckers are still on tour for their excellent 2016 release American Band. Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley still swap vocal duties so effortlessly, there’s no time to question it. We’re along for their ride from start to finish, and boy do they deliver one hell of a ride. The audience sang along to the band’s newer tunes like the heartbreaking “What It Means” and the powerful “Surrender Under Protest”, as well as older favorites like “The Righteous Path” and “Women Without Whiskey”. And the guys were joined by legendary DBT producer David Barbe. But the truly epic moment came when both powerhouses – DBT and Wennerstrom (with her band) – came together for a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks”. It was a big way to end a big night.
