Fans Rejoice: Phish Reaches Back To VA Beach Summer ’97 For ‘Dinner And a Movie’

Phish is (finally) reaching back to the vaunted “1.0” era for the latest iteration of their weekly Dinner And A Movie livestream video series with their performance from July 21, 1997, at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater in Virginia Beach, VA. Being that this was the first U.S. date for that highly renowned summer tour after a monthlong European jaunt in June, this classic concert features five stateside debuts, including a show opening run of “Ghost”, “Dog Stole Things”, “Piper”, and “Dirt” as well as as the U.S. debut of “Wading in the Velvet Sea” during the second set. This show, which contains hints of the “cow-funk” sound the band would fully incorporate later that year during their legendary fall tour, is teeming with musical highlights including a monster first-set “Bathtub Gin” that stretches past the 20-minute mark as well as a fun second-set guest appearance from the late LeRoi Moore of The Dave Matthews Band that features all five musicians playing multiple instruments at once and includes a playful tease on the Woody Woodpecker theme.

As with previous iterations of Dinner And A Movie, this week’s selection features an organization –Street Medicine Institute – that will receive proceeds from the band’s charitable wing The WaterWheel Foundation as well as some band member-chosen recipes – Italian American Stuffed Peppers, Pasta e Fagioli with Black Eyed Peas, & Collard Greens and Polenta Snickerdoodle Cookies courtesy of Trey and NYC restaurant Don Angie.
