Blunda Brings Clean and Lush Pop Sounds Together on New EP ‘Pulling for You’ (ALBUM REVIEW)

Andy Blunda (aka Blunda) is a composer and musician from North Hollywood. He is a busy man, and even if you don’t know it, you may have heard his compositions on shows like Ax Men and Jay Leno’s Garage. On top of his duties composing music for television shows, he is a producer and has toured with artists like Fastball and Jason Falkner.

Blunda, like the rest of us, has had to find a way to deal with life in “the new normal”. For him, it meant going through old demos of songs he hadn’t finished, reworking and compiling them into this EP Pulling for You. He called the project, “a cathartic way of finishing the old in order to make way for something new.”

Whatever these songs sounded like as demos, you can tell that his time as a composer for television influences his music. Whether it’s the swell of strings or the addition of backing vocals, he knows how to combine sounds to create a mood with his music.

The sound varies between songs. The opening track “Low” is a mellow song driven by the underlying synth. There is a Brit-pop feel running throughout the album, particularly in “Pulling for You” and “Fall” with melodies that bring Travis and Charlatans UK to mind. No matter how the songs sound, it’s easy to imagine each one as part of a soundtrack. He has certainly mastered cinematic feel in these songs.

You can tell that a lot of effort went into this with Blunda performing, producing, and mixing the album by himself. He did pretty well with all three jobs. This is a very clean and lush EP with layers of sound that come together beautifully.
