LISTEN: Keegan Powell Journeys To Complex Shades Of Psych Pop On “World Awake”

Keegan Powell started his journey writing and recording in Teenage Kicks as guitarist on their debut album Spoils Of Youth, recorded with Alain Johannes (Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures). Powell went on to compose songs for Chastity, on their debut LP Death Lust , Home Made Satan, and Suffer Summer. In 2020, Powell joined the studio project Darling Congress alongside Brett Emmons and Peter Van Helvoort of The Glorious Sons as lead guitarist.

“World Awake”, off of Powell’s debut solo album Previous Pain, combines elements of psychedelic rock, with alternative folk, brit-pop, and shoe-gaze into a tidy, two and half minutes. Constantly cycling through mini themes, each one equally intriguing, “World Awake” plays like a compact Dirty Projectors song without all the jagged edges. This being Powell’s first release as a solo artist, the complexities of the piece showcase an artist embracing newfound freedom to explore whatever reaches of the musical galaxy he wants. Previous Pain is out now.

“World Awake,” is a reflection on how the generation I was born into is simply too aware for our own good; with a world of information and answers at our fingertips. How do you subdue the phantoms of your mind that seek the world’s knowledge,” says Keegan.
