Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival Day 2: Bonnie Prince Billy, Liam Kaz, Cut Worms, Hand Habits Electic Up MASS MoCa

Most festivals leave you racing between sets, compromising time with your favorite—or your new favorite—acts as you try not to miss anything. But at Solid Sound, no artists overlap, giving you the full opportunity to absorb each performance if you choose. Saturday at MASS MoCA was a day for doing just that, as highlights like Bonnie Prince Billy, Liam Kazar, Cut Worms, Hand Habits, NNAMDI, and Japanese Breakfast kept the day fresh and interesting at every turn. Nels Cline turned up in numerous places, including with Japanese Breakfast and Mike Watt.

Crowds stayed through the rain, the humidity, and blazing sun, and then the cool, clear night air coming off the mountains until Wilco closed things out. The band took the stage for another two-hour set, this time with set pieces resembling the honeycombed towers that cover Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, an album that celebrated its 20th-anniversary last year. The set was a mix of new and old, yet more performances of songs off the newly released Cruel Country, and an encore that brought Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner to the stage supporting “Jesus, Etc.”
