Indie rocker Megan Slankard has returned with a catchy kiss-off anthem titled “California,” which is a mighty punch kick tune that slaps the otherwise cliche use of the state’s title in previous songs by others: looking at you Anthony Keidis. Slankard takes the new wave punk flair of Wet Leg and mixes it up with her own brand of ragged reflection that makes her DIY rocker with an edge.

Slankard and her band The Wreckage have independently sold over 40,000 copies of five self-released albums and are currently planning the release of a brand-new album project in October 2022. The record, which was co-produced with Nashville producer Alex Wong, (Delta Rae, Vienna Teng, Elizabeth & The Catapult,) will showcase new sides of Megan’s music, balancing delightfully belligerent rock and roll with cinematic soundscapes of orchestral instruments and robot harmonies. Glide is premiering the poignant lo-fi rocker “California” below…

“California” is a gentle reminder of why it might not be the best idea to date a songwriter. After the inevitable end of a terrible relationship, our protagonist tells her ex what she thinks of him, and that he may take with him whatever he likes, just so long as he leaves her with the State of California. In a final act of defiance, I take all of his things to the thrift store in hopes of delighting future shoppers,” describes Slankard about the track.

  1. Well, you’ve got to give Megan credit; over the years she’s given sad songs and happy songs and even some mad songs. But now she’s branching into angry songs and doing a pretty good job of it.

Then again, after all of these years, I am a bit biased.
