Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Colorado is one of the world’s premier concert venues. Just recently comedian Bill Burr shot his new special at the scenic concert hall and over the summer Erykah Badu made it a stop on her short 6-city summer tour. Last night (8/9) though, a more unconventional show took over the world-renowned, naturally formed venue. The original creators of South Park Trey Parker and Matt Stone infiltrated the venue to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the popular animated series with a night filled with songs from the show and guest bands who have contributed to the series over its storied history.
The stage design was the first thing that came off as unique for this show. There were spots for two full bands along with a small choir. The two full band set-ups were for Parker and Stone’s frequent collaborators Ween and Primus. Primus is the band behind the famous theme song from the show while Ween made an appearance during the show’s second season along with having Parker and Stone’s band DVDA open for them at the turn of the millennium.
The nearly two-and-a-half-hour show compiled performances of goofy songs with the show along with Primus and Ween helping each other go through originals. Ween and Primus assisted each other on classics like “It’s Gonna Be a Long Night” and “Here Come The Bastards”, while the two bands performed, the creators of South Park chugged drinks in lawn chairs on the side of the stage. Each band had its time in the solo spotlight, Primus taking center stage to perform their famous theme song and “Jerry Was A Racecar Driver” while Ween kicked off the night with lone performances of “Take Me Away” and “Roses Are Free”.
The most magical moments of the night came when all three musical acts shared the stage. The creative duo behind the show joined Ween and Primus to go through originals from the show like “Uncle Fucka”, “San Diego”, and “Yelper Special”.
Primus and Ween weren’t the only special guests that joined Parker and Stone. Fellow composers from the acclaimed series Bruce Howell joined members of Primus to perform “Let’s Fighting Love”. The two who created the show also went through songs from other creative projects like The Book of Morman and Team America: World Police, the popular song “America, Fuck Yeah” from the latter closed out the show.
This was the first of two shows for the South Park creators at Red Rocks. No word on if tonight’s show will hold any differences from the show on August 9 but knowing anything from the show, it is all unpredictable.
