The legendary Depeche Mode is gearing up for their triumphant return to rock music as they prep for the release of their new LP. Memento Mori is set to release on March 24 via Venusnote and features 12 new tracks from the band. They brought the album’s sole single to life last night (February 23) on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “Ghosts Again” has the band crooning over a sparse arrangement as Depeche Mode continues to hit fresh strides this deep into their career.
Their performance last night was moving. The baritone voice of Dave Gahan echoes in the TV studio as the rest of the band builds a gorgeous arrangement for him to croon over. The nature of “Ghosts Again” has a different feeling to it after the band lost one of its founding members in keyboardist Andy Fletcher, who passed in May of last year. Gahan’s haunting vocals and lyrics of the afterlife hit closer to home now more than ever.
Along with their live performance, Depeche Mode also delivered a web-exclusive performance of their classic hit “Personal Jesus”. Even 30-plus years after its release, the thumping basslines of the track still shake you to your core.
Along with their performances on the late-night circuit, Depeche Mode also kicked off their massive world tour this week. Leg one will have the band touring the states and hitting major cities until mid-May when they hop on a plane for the overseas leg. Check out both performances and the full list of tour dates below.
