LISTEN: Spencer Thomas Smith Delivers Aching Melodic Americana On “Gas Station Blue”

Since the popularity of Jason Isbell’s Southeastern and subsequent releases, there’s been no shortage of songwriters really leaning into that sad-boy country sound, but it’s hard to complain if you’re a fan of that introspective blue-collar poetry drawn along by scratchy acoustic guitar and a sometimes bellowing and often twangy telecaster. That’s just what you’ll get with “Gas Station Blue” the new single from Spencer Thomas Smith. Often the mistake on a track like this is utilizing too much studio magic, but with a clean and tasteful production, the song really just stands up on its own, and it’s got legs. With a masterful and satisfying rhyme scheme set to a familiar enough melody that doesn’t feel cut and paste you’ll pull up a chair and ask for another when this sweet somber love song comes to an end.

“Gas Station Blue” is the title track of my forthcoming album. The song can be summed up by the first line: “front porch sitting and baseball hittin”. It’s that feeling you get driving down the road with the windows down or walking out of the gas station with your favorite snack. “Gas Station Blue” was the final song that I wrote for the album. I already knew that I wanted the album to be called “Gas Station Blue ”. The phrase awoke something in me, a feeling I couldn’t place, so the song helped me place that feeling. The feeling of missing something and it being right there the whole time. Just wanting someone to sit next to. To make up for lost time, to make love, and the realization that we are just making this shit up as we go,” says Smith.
