LISTEN: Indonesia’s Grrl Gang Keep It Manic With Raging Emotional Feel On “Better Than Life”

Hailing from the cultural city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Grrrl Gang is a rising force in the independent music scene with their infectious melodies, anthemic songs, and electrifying live performances. The power trio, composed of Angeeta Sentana on guitar and vocals, Akbar Rumandung on bass, and Edo Alventa on guitar, has been making waves in the Southeast Asian music scene since their formation in 2016.

Step into the viscous and jagged world of “Better Than Life” from Grrrl Gang. The track is firey and fresh, pushed by dynamite drum force, catchy guitar riffs, and Angeeta Sentana’s cool, collected vocal approach. Sentana and company blend a raging emotional feel with a subdued vocal coolness, truly a rock elixir we can joyfully sip on.

“I constantly struggle with suicidal thoughts, and I feel like it reached its peak in my early 20s. The fact that I am diagnosed with bipolar disorder and that I have to live with it every single day were some of the reasons why I thought I was better off dead. It felt tiring to be in my body, having to go through and navigate the mania and depression, especially when I was still unmedicated,” says Sentana

“There’s a tarot reference in “Better Than Life”—“I’m locked inside a tower/I hear it grumbling from the ground”—which refers to “The Tower” card. I used it to refer to a sudden and critical transformation that was about to come into my life that would eventually help me be able to change how I treat and see myself.”
