LISTEN: Grampadrew Delivers Captain Beefheart Echoing Relic On “Smoke Show”

Grampadrew is a troubadour from San Diego, California who sings country-tinged folk-rock grounded in the DIY ethos of his punk rock youth. Lyrically driven, the music explores roots with diverse influences such as John Prine, Joy Division, Neko Case, and PJ Harvey.

“Smoke Show” is a favorite from Grampadrew’s latest project, Greatest Hits, and combines Tom Waits meets Captain Beefheart style vocals with a jangly arrangement made for swaying. The harmonies sound rusty as the lead vocals fly off the rails and fall into the bouncy tempos.
