Originating from Gainesville, FL, Sister Hazel is comprised of five gifted, seasoned musicians whose well-spring of natural talent has been called “one of the Top 100 Most Influential Independent Performers of the last 15 years” by Performing Songwriter Magazine. Song “All for You” topped the adult alternative charts during the summer of 1997 and the success propelled their album to platinum status.
Living up to their fan-centered reputation, the band hosts annual events like “Hazelnut Hang,” that focuses on fan involvement and was a pioneer in themed cruise experiences by co-founding “The Rock Boat,” a cruise featuring nonstop opportunities for fan/artist interaction. Sister Hazel has been equally attentive to connecting with their audience through social media. They have since made their Grand Ole Opry debut and shared the stages with country music superstars at The CMA Festival, Tortuga Music Festival, among others. In addition to the events and touring, the band also gives back with “Lyrics For Life.” Founded by singer Ken Block and the Band, the charity unites musicians and celebrities for concerts and auctions to benefit cancer research and patient-care charities.
Today Glide is excited to premiere the band’s new single “Love You More” ahead of a full album release coming later this year. Vibrant and funky guitar lines plus a nice dose of soulful, upbeat organ complement the feel-good lyrics that sound just as catchy as anything this band has ever written. Indeed, this song comes across as a cross between power pop and Americana that feels like a true full band effort with their songwriting and musicianship stronger than ever.
Listen to the track and read our chat with the band below…
What is the story behind this song? How did it come together? What is it about?
This song was written by me, Drew Copeland, and Jack Sizemore, who plays guitar for Jason Aldean. We all met in Nashville years ago and wrote it about taking a chance on love after being burned.
Are there any lyric lines that you really love or that really speak to you? What do you feel makes them resonate?
I like the lyrics, “I’ll catch you when you fall. I’ll be there through it all. You can count on me.” At the time of writing this song, I was in a new relationship after a painful break up. I think those sentiments are exactly what someone wants to hear when taking a chance on a new relationship.
If listeners can take away one thing from having heard this song, what do you hope that is?
We wanted this song to be fun and to represent a positive way forward after hard times. Life keeps going and there can always be a person who loves you for who you are.
How does this song fit in among the others on the forthcoming album? How is it similar or different?
I think this song is very different from the rest of the record. We rarely play funky type of music. This is a more soul/funk vibe than anything we’ve done in years.
If you could use only three words to describe your music now, what would they be and why?
Inspired, thoughtful, and real. We have embraced our roots and have let them take center stage in our writing and recording. We try to make people think as well as vibe to the music, and we are so grateful to be doing this after so many years that it inspires us to give our fans the best music we can make.
