Based in Norwich, Jonny Herman is an exciting, emerging independent artist. Originally a drummer turned bedroom producer, Herrman has been carefully honing his sound over the past ten years, writing, recording, and gigging around Norwich and Oxfordshire. While Herman initially cut his teeth playing in various bands during his formative years, it was in 2018 that he made the pivotal decision to embark on a solo career, channeling his creativity into crafting compositions that were solely his and represented his character.
The simplistic beauty of Herman’s “Oriana” catalyzes the song’s warm intimacy. The subtle grooves of the guitar add a gentle sway that elevates the spurts of angelic backing harmonies. While “Oriana” finds its magic in its bluntness, Herman deals with complex emotions. On a bed of infectious acoustics, Herman grapples with his past by almost completely dismissing it while still attempting to hold on to the memories that shaped him. “Oriana” creates a delicate balance between accepting the present and acknowledging the past over tiny flairs of danceable melodies. Herman takes folk tropes and makes them his own via sentimental lyrics and stunning guitar work on his latest single from the upcoming Old Romatics EP.
“This song represents a bit of a change in my life and the tension I felt when starting a new chapter after recovering from a previous one,” explains Herman. “Lots of classical imagery here to represent that theme of new beginnings, too, including even the etymology of the name Oriana.”
