Psychiatric Metaphors is the brainchild of New Jersey multi-instrumentalist Sam Taylor. Also known as PSYCH METS, Taylor throws together elements of psych, garage, post-punk, noise rock, and experimental music to create an all-around psychedelic fever dream. The Metaphors’ songs are dripping with energy, anxiety, and the thrills of pure sonic chaos. Ultimately, you can’t pigeonhole Taylor’s darkened psych-punk sounds as he brings more exploratory songwriting, more noise, and heavier distortions to his songs than his predecessors in the scene.
Calling Psych Mets’ latest single, “I’m Sick,” explosive would be doing a terrible injustice to the dense punk textures being deployed. The band creates an aggressive atmosphere that scoffs at the world around them while building its own new world where they are free to roam through searing guitars and thudding drums. The band borrows from punk’s roots while avoiding sounding like a carbon copy of the genre’s greats, landing in the coveted middle ground between the modern post-punk wave and the nostalgic formula it is built out of. In just under two minutes, Psych Mets introduce you to their refreshing brand of blistering punk on “I’m Sick.”
“‘I’m Sick’ explores the dread of bad decisions, mental anguish, and the never-ending hamster wheel of death that society makes us run on a daily basis,” explains the band. “I’m sick of you, I’m sick of me, I’m sick of everything I see, I’m sick.”
