LISTEN: Ok Neighborhood’s “Chrysalis” Places Nimble Folk Next To Dense Grunge Distortion

Ok Neighborhood is an indie band based in the DFW area of Texas. Its sound is influenced by folk music, slowcore, and shoegaze. Chris Pitts started OKN in 2021. The band’s main songwriters/singers are Lia Graham and Chris Pitts. Since its formation, OKN has released two projects and a select few singles. In 2024, the band released two singles, June’s “Too Much Like Me” and the recently released “Chrysalis.”

On their latest single, OKN explores the deepest corners of folk to emerge with a quaint portrait of their intimate sound. “Chrysalis” may lean toward the folk side more than any other genre, but the nuances of these performances separate the band from their peers. What begins as a sentimental folk tune with cascading acoustics quickly evolves into a grunge-tinged ballad with a sense of urgency despite the slow-burning tempos. The distant yet potent vocals cut through the dense distortion throughout the warping arrangement with a relaxed cadence and poetic songwriting. The perplexing part of “Chrysalis” is how OKN found a way to keep their walls of distortion and ever-growing instrumentation to maintain this level of intimacy. Regardless of how the guitar tones shift and the grooves change, OKN’s “Chrysalis” keeps one foot in humble folk and another in intimidating, dark rock as lush vocals nimbly navigate an ever-changing landscape.
