LISTEN: Well Well Well Blends Funky Soul With Infectious Pop On “Mar-A-Lago”

Well Well Well, the smooth-rock icons of San Diego have gathered some of their finest material to date for their new album. Summertime Heat finds primary songwriters Seton Edgerton & Daniel Nichols refining their sound into a genre all their own that’s equal parts satirical and sincere. The resulting album stands as Well Well Well’s finest work, recalling the smooth sounds of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald, and Prince.

Working with a collection of San Diego’s finest musicians, the group wrote and tracked tirelessly for four years in between national tours & busy schedules, working in professional backyard studios, vacation rentals across Southern California, and their own home studio overlooking the San Diego Airport. In contrast with past releases, this album finds the band embracing a fuller sound, complete with horns, synthesizers, and pedal steel. Toro y Moi collaborator Pat Jones mixed half the album at Honeymoon Suite in Los Angeles, while co-producer David Glasebrook did the remaining mixing and mastering at his studio in Oakland, CA.

Blazing, lush horns welcome you to the soulful funk of “Mar-a-Lago,” the latest single from Well Well Well’s upcoming Summertime Heat LP. The new single is a breezy outing with soaring falsettos and groovy funk, so bright and sunny it’ll overheat whatever device you may be listening to. On the surface, “Mar-a-Lago” is a simplistic funk track aimed at landing on your summer playlist, but the songwriting reveals a more profound artistry to Well Well Well’s approach. While detailing imaginative scenarios, the cheeky songwriting showcases the band’s ability to employ vivid imagery. The events that take place in this song are far-fetched, but their hypnotic delivery and captivating melodies bring their fictitious world to life. While the easy-going single gives plenty of opportunities to get lost in the basics of the track, “Mar-a-Lago” gives us a unique look into the nuances of Well Well Well’s relaxed sound while giving us a preview of their upcoming album.

“‘Mar-A-Lago’ is a smooth, satirical daydream with driving percussion, funky clavinet & tasty horns,” explains Edgerton. “Let your imagination wisp you away.”
