Today Glide is excited to offer an exclusive premiere of the video for the new single “Purple Flowers,” which is brimming with 90s alt-rock energy. Indeed, the song is a properly infectious rocker that showcases Moen’s strength as a songwriter, singer, and band leader. The song is fun and upbeat, with bouncy bass, hard-charging guitars, and even a burst of saxophone to complement Moen’s vocals. The video also captures that feeling of going out on a date and overcoming that to find a sense of community.

Moen describes the inspiration behind the song:

This song was written about one of my first times going out in Chicago after I moved here. Things were opening back up and there was a show at a place called the Rainbo. I walked in and felt overwhelmed by how many people were so, respectfully, beautiful as hell in there. I got nervous to say anything to anyone and left. I was walking around my house tapping on fences and the lyrics starting coming. I rushed back home and wrote this in basically one sitting. Edited later on but the bones of it happened that night.

The leading lady of the music video, Emily Neale, had an interpretation of this song that rings even more true to me. She said this songs sounds like someone who sees people hanging out and having a sense of community and the character in the song wanting to be a part of that. I felt that deeply when I moved here to Chicago. I’d see people have such earnest connections with one another and I wanted that too. I guess mine finally came when I started to put myself out there and talk to people at shows and clubs. I’m so glad I did.

I’d always wanted to write something fun and upbeat I and I guess it just had to come naturally unlike the courage to say hey to someone next to you at a bar.

Special thanks to my best friend in music, Tristan Huygen, who has kept my little musical boat afloat over the years. He’s a fantastic writer, singer, guitarist, bassist, producer, engineer, and friend. These songs and I are forever grateful for his time and skills!
