While a 20-verse murder ballad might sound something out of Bob Dylan’s Desire album (think “Hurricane” or “Isis”), some others apparently have the magic with lyrics. Include Mean Mary in that conversation. She has gone deep and then some on her latest track, “Murder Creek,” which Glide is premiering below. This ballad encapsulates the essence of rural mystery, deep-rooted grudges, and the haunting aftermath of a chilling night in Alabama’s infamous Murder Creek. Mary masterfully blends the playful and the profound within the Americana folk genre.

Mean Mary’s 19th studio release Woman Creature (Portrait of a Woman, Pt. 2),, marks her remarkable evolution as an artist, beginning with her first album recorded at the age of six. Mary is joined once again by her brother Frank James, who lends his 12-string guitar and vocals on multiple tracks, including the unique addition of jungle animal sounds on the infectious track “Tarzan.” Mary’s mother, author (and former Florida “snake-catcher”) Jean James, co-writes six of the tracks, adding a fresh creativity that highlights why this mother-daughter duo are award winners.

Woman Creature (Portrait of a Woman, Pt. 2) stands strong as a standalone album while also perfectly continuing the journey started with Portrait of a Woman, Pt 1 in 2022. This album is another feather in the cap of Mean Mary’s impressive discography, showcasing her unparalleled ability to blend various genres and evoke deep emotions through her music.

Celebrated for her exceptional banjo playing and distinctive style within the Americana and folk genres, Mean Mary combines traditional roots with contemporary sounds and unconventional themes, earning her widespread acclaim. An award-winning musician and writer, she has over 35 million views on her YouTube videos, reflecting her broad appeal.
