Tawny Ellis is an accomplished singer, songwriter, musician, sculptor, actress and producer. Born in Savannah, Georgia, currently living in Los Angeles. Tawny is known for her thought-provoking lyrics and musical compositions. Mastering diverse instruments such as lap steel and mountain dulcimer, creates layers in her magical compositions. Her work has a distinctive quality rooted in sweet Southern folk indicative of Patsy Cline and Emmylou Harris.
Singing since childhood, Ellis’ sultry sound and complicated rhythms come from experience. Although a Savannah, GA native, Ellis traveled across America due to her nomadic childhood before landing in Southern California, where she met longtime collaborator Gio Loria, who, along with Ellis, brings her lush melodies and lyrical storytelling to audiences around the world.
As Ellis gears up to release her new album Edge Of The World in 2025, Glide is excited to offer an exclusive premiere of the song “Sweet Georgia” and its corresponding video. With a cast of talented musicians that includes Grammy Award-winning Tim Hanseroth on guitar (Brandi Carlile), Corey McCormick on Bass (Lukas Nelson, Neil Young), drummer Kyle Crane (Rufus Wainwright, Daniel Lanois, Madison Cunningham, Neko Case), and Carey Frank on keys, the song is a powerful and autobiographical track that draws from her roots in Savannah, Georgia. Mixing Americana, alt-rock, and a folk-pop sensibility, the song showcases Ellis’ talent as a singer-songwriter as she recounts a childhood memory of being left alone under a willow tree for long stretches of time, where she felt as if she was in the care of the tree itself. The resulting anthem is one of self-reliance, psychic abilities, and an unwavering love for nature and the gifts that solitude can bring.
Ellis describes the inspiration behind the tune:
“I wrote ‘Sweet Georgia’ after realizing I had a recurring memory of being left alone as a baby in my crib under the willow tree in our backyard. My mother used to tell me that she would leave me out there for hours, needing a break as a young mother with another toddler at home. This memory was unsettling to me, so I decided to explore it and turn it into something positive, something that reflects who I’ve become because of it. Writing about it in my journal felt therapeutic, and eventually, it became a song.”
