LISTEN: Undergone’s “Falling Apart” Is Restless Shoegaze With An Abstract Spirit

Undergone is a young, alternative 5-piece band from Katowice, Poland, that combines a diverse range of genres. The lineup consists of vocalist Wiktoria Borecka, guitarist Kamil Orszulik, guitarist Dawid Bestry, drummer Mikołaj Żarski, and bassist Alicja Więcław.

Together, the band just released their first single in the form of “Falling Apart.” On their debut release, the band introduces itself as nuanced performers unafraid to push the delicate boundaries of shoegaze. While the vocals employ a familiar lush feel, the instrumentation leans towards a dark, indie rock sound, creating some dense and enticing textures to get lost in. Just as you’re wading through the infectious vocals, a searing guitar section kicks in at blazing speed, only for Undergone to bring the mood back to sinfully sweet rock balladry. There is a stadium-sized presence to the vocals that gives this warping, off-kilter cut its anthematic feel, but it doesn’t appear the band was out to make an anthem for the world, but a personal piece of themselves. “Falling Apart” is a vulnerable song that consistently evolves, leaving the listener with a welcomed case of whiplash. Unndergone’s “Falling Apart” is a moving shoegaze-tinted tune with a restless spirit that becomes more palpable with every listen.
