Out of the ashes of ambition, failure, success, and a million PBRs comes Dumb Crush, a DIY powerhouse formed by Owen Hooper, Liam Colbert, and Elliot Isaac. With hundreds of shows across North America and Europe and over a million streams between them, their debut EP, What’s Gotten Into People?, was recorded live in just two days at Dreamhouse Studios in Toronto.
With a pulsing drum beat and cartoonish vocals, Dumb Crush unleashes their latest single in the form of the searing “Annihilation.” The single lands somewhere between thumbing new wave and warping post-punk, and while finding a genre to describe this young band would be the easy way out, the nuances of their music tell a much deeper story. “Annihilation” introduces Dumb Crush as passionate rockers unafraid to dip their toes into the fusion waters. Their latest single is an infectious yet aggressive display of their ability to toe the melodic line between danceable and hectic, highlighting the intricacies of their views on modern rock. You can get lost in the simplistic beauty of the arrangement, but the songwriting here is nothing to look over. Dumb Crush’s vague yet potent songwriting is delivered with a poetic punch, a literary slapshot that wakes the listener up and forces them to focus on the band’s unforgettable single. With a subtle theatrical flair, “Annihilation” is a raw piece of modern rock, characterized by explosive production and acrobatic vocals.
