SONG PREMIERE: Gary Clark Jr. Band Member Elijah Ford Exudes Indie Rock Cool on Transcendent “Love Is Not Enough”

Elijah Ford would have to work hard at ignoring his musical roots; with amazing vocalist Kirsten Ford for a mother and guitar hero Marc Ford (The Black Crowes, Ben Harper) for a father, it’s obvious the multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter comes by his passion naturally. But Elijah’s also forged his own paths in his music making, whether it be as a producer, bandleader, or band member (he’s currently playing bass with Gary Clark Jr.), with a sound that’s uniquely his – and his new album Every Time We Separate documents exactly that.

The birthing of some of these songs began ten years ago, with Elijah working with a mix of producers/engineers – including Dennis MacKay (David Bowie, Mick Ronson); Danny Reisch (Local Natives, Heartless Bastards); Jake Blanton (The Killers, Sia); and Stew Jackson (Massive Attack, Phantom Limb) – to come up with the sonic blend he was looking for. If it hadn’t been for COVID-19, this album would’ve been released in 2020, but … while the world was on standby with its head tucked under its wing, Elijah connected with Gary Clark Jr. and found himself immersed in studio work and touring. The music on Every Time We Separate has had time to steep; it’s now ready to be served.

It’s easy to hear the influence of the two regions Elijah’s called home so far in the album’s tracks. There are fathoms-deep moments of ethereal swirl that feel like early-morning mists on Laguna Beach – but the grooves and churn woven through the album’s ten tracks incorporate enough Austin-flavored attitude to make Alejandro Escovedo proud.

Today, Glide is excited to offer an exclusive premiere of the standout track “Love Is Not Enough,” a driving indie rocker brimming with coolness. Reminiscent of fellow Austinites Spoon mixed with an expansive arena rock sound, Ford guides the song’s force with his commanding vocals backed by sharp guitar, soaring synths, and a powerful beat. While Ford spends more of his time as a band member and collaborator “Love Is Not Enough” is all the evidence you need to hear to realize that this rising talent is ready for the spotlight.

Ford offers his own reflection on the meaning of the song:

“Singing about something that hurt acts as an exorcism and a reminder. I wanted to feel the dirge of it all…and transcend it.”
