Eisley – Paradise Rock Club Boston, MA 6/23/13

The dark lighting at the Paradise was a perfect match for Eisley’s dramatic, yet powerfully melodic music. This incredibly talented family from Tyler, Texas held its audience captively from start to finish. They put together a well-structured set that conjured a mashed-up jam between the Cardigans, Pixies and the Beatles.

The band walked on to the stage and the audience started cheering, clapping and yelling chants of, ”I love you!” and “Will you marry me?”. Chauntelle DuPree (Guitar),, quickly plugged in her guitar – ready to go. Garron DuPree (Bass) tucked himself away in front of his cabinet and hid behind his long mop of hair. Sherri DuPree (Vocals/guitar) strapped on her Fender over a very colorful ensemble of a black lace top, a daisy-laden short skirt and green knee high socks. Weston DuPree (Drums) enthusiastically jumped behind his kit wearing a blue tank top with white polka dots. Stacy DuPree (Vocals/keyboards/guitar) elegantly dressed in a flowing frock, checked out her keyboard, but started the set – playing guitar.

Eisley started the show with “Currents,” a trippy ballad from their latest album by the same name. The more upbeat “Invasion” followed, with their fans singing each and every word. “Sad” kept the momentum going and this song could easily be a Breeders B-side, but with more polished results. Beautiful harmonies and funky bass drove the hypnotic pair “Save My Soul” and “Mr. Moon”.

The mix of a lullaby-style vocals and marching drums of  “I Could Be There For You” changed the mood of the set. However, this didn’t dissuade the audience’s attention. They were still hanging tight. The mellow “Deep Space” off of the eponymous EP, and  “Laugh It Off” continued this subdued portion of the set before tearing into the rocking “Many Funerals” and “Drink the Water”, which was reminiscent of Radiohead’s Ok Computer era, ended the set.

The band was tight, playing a somewhat different set list arrangement from recent shows. They played well and sounded great, however any interaction between the band members was absent and it was clear that Sherri and Weston do understand that the audience needs something to watch as while listening to the music. They became the focal points with Sherri grooving on her Fender Jaguar and Weston ferociously attacking his kit. Unfortunately the rest of the band remained less animated. What really stood out overall was the pure talent of their intelligent lyrics, vocals and ability to harmonize. The women in this band possess incredibly angelic voices that still tease a darker side of Rock & Roll.
