  1. Why list The Curtain as a bust out, when we’ve been getting The Curtain With for a while now? Why would half of a song they are currently playing be a bust out?

  2. I’d like to hear The Curtain without, personally. Not every time, not even 4 times out of five, but I miss the way the old version of Curtain would slam into the next song such as Curtain -> Jim from 8/17/96 or Curtain -> Mike’s from 11/23/96.

That’s my $.02 and why The Curtain was listed and why Phish.net keeps separate records for The Curtain & The Curtain With

  3. None, all those are poor choices thats why they aren’t played anymore……but if i have to choose Daniel Saw the Stone!

  4. Did I miss a Shafty? That hasn’t been played in the modern era has it? Would love to get the Olivia’s Pool era version, a la Denver 97.

  5. Personally, the only Phish bustout that would really make he happy would be sticking a huge mind-melting jam in the middle of a song where nobody would ever expect it.

Granted, we aren’t really expecting huge mind melting jams out of anything anymore, but if Phish is going to drop 20 minutes of improv on me, I’d prefer for it to come out of some typically jamless classic..particularly Bouncing Around The Room.

People hate the song for all the wrong reasons. It hasn’t been overplayed since the average Phish fan was in diapers. It’s packed full of psychedelic lyrics and gorgeous harmonies, all draped over the kind of beat that just begs to be taken into outer space. For the last 10 years I’ve been thinking about how a 30-40 minute Bouncin would be a masterstroke of Phish. Nobody would see it coming, it would almost be like a prank or a joke, except there ain’t nothin funny about 30 minutes of improv spiraling into a tornado and devastating a 16 block radius around MSG.

  6. Shafty would be cool also. That one really seemed to represent the band being in a great headspace whenever it emerged for a few years there. The last one I can remember is the Maze->Shafty->Maze from 2000, though the lysergic Island Tour soundcheck version is almost as great as that peakfest.

How about a Squirming Coil where instead of leaving the stage, the band just launches into a glorious Hood-like jam lead by Page? I know it’s happened once…but i’d love to see it in person.

A whole show where the typical jam-platforms are played standardized and the typical “filler” songs are stretched out would be amazing. Phish, like most jambands has always stayed a little bit too comfortable with the songs they choose to seriously blow minds with, IMO. Obviously there are plenty of exceptions (See: that 35 minute Fluffhead from Alpine)

It just seems strange to me that a band who lives in the moment as much as Phish doesn’t take more opportunities to make power moves in unexpected places. HYHU->20 minutes of spine compressing jam->HYHU? Yes please. Keep us on our toes. We like the view from two inches higher.

  7. …i dig a few of these (Daniel, ATR, No Dogs…), but the bust-out vibe doesn’t really apply to any of the remaining tunes not played since Hampton, IMO. T’s doing a respectable job w/ setlists, he can’t please everyone every night. Seems to me the best way to surprise would be with more unexpected covers or even an unnannounced album side or two. Any ideas…?
