Stormy Mondays: Trane and Miles

As we do every year at Stormy Mondays, we celebrate the arrival of the new year with the music of John Coltrane. This time around we’re looking back to Trane’s collaborations with Miles Davis, and I use that word deliberately.

It’s been said that Miles did three things for Trane: hired him, fired him and gave him a soprano sax. In 1960, after Trane had already left Davis’s employ, he returned to the fold for a final, short European run, but at that point his musical mind had already grown too large to play the role of side man.

The John Coltrane Quintet with Eric Dolphy was just around the corner, complete with the sheets of sound that we commonly associate with the master. What we have here, however, are three tracks – So What, Round Midnight, and Walkin’ – from West Germany on that final run with Miles. Coltrane is bursting through the seams of the music, and Miles sounds pretty damn sweet too, especially on the So What. A happy and prosperous to you all, and as always, enjoy
