The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players: Off And On Broadway

[rating=4.00]

You can’t help but smile when you see the youngest of the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, drummer Rachel Trachtenburg, wailing away on her drum kit. It’s terribly cute. And it’s that cuteness which seems to define how the Trachtenburg family live their lives. The film, which splices live footage of some of their better known songs (if they even have any) alongside vintage behind-the-scenes material, is an intimate look at how a performing family can succeed by continuously swimming upstream.

It’s a movie about a true rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, but there are no VH1 “Behind The Music” moments here – unless you consider shopping for organic vegetables as crazy as thrashing hotel rooms after orgies.  But it’s not all shots of the band.  Brief interview snippets with Nellie McKay, comedian David Cross and Regina Spektor among others reveals a genuine peer adoration for the quirky trio, and who can blame them – it’s a difficult group not to root for.
