White Stripes Go Orchestral On Aluminum
Ten White Stripes tracks have been given new orchestralral readings for an album dubbed “Aluminium,” due Nov. 6 internationally via XL Recordings. A North American release date has yet to be announced.
White was not involved in the project, which was spearheaded by XL head Richard Russell. “I’ve grown up on popular music, but in the last couple of years I’ve begun to appreciate classical music, and for some reason I’ve often thought of the White Stripes when I’ve heard it: the hypnotic, repetitious, enigmatic nature of it,” he says.
Working with composer Jody Talbot, Russell drafted a “specially assembled orchestra comprising many of the U.K.’s finest young classical musicians” to perform tracks like “The Hardest Button to Button,” “I’m Bound To Pack It Up,” “Let’s Build a Home” and “Forever for Her (Is Over for Me).” Four Tet has remixed the latter cut but it has not yet been revealed how that version will be released.
“Aluminium” will only be available through the project’s Web site in a limited run of 3,333 CDs and 999 vinyl albums, the latter edition of which will include a silkscreen print by artist Rob Jones. The album will also be sold in digital form.
Here is the track list for “Aluminium”:
“Aluminum”
“I’m Bound To Pack It Up”
“Why Cant You Be Nicer To Me?”
“Astro”
“Never Far Away”
“Little Bird”
“Let’s Build a Home”
“Who’s a Big Baby?”
“The Hardest Button to Button”

Jet Cancels This Weekend’s Shows Due To Nic Cester’s Laryngitis
Atlantic recording group Jet has been forced to cancel two upcoming shows as lead singer Nic Cester has acute laryngitis. Doctors have ordered Cester to rest for four to five days. The cancelled dates – Philadelphia tonight, September 29th, as well as Toronto on Sunday, October 1st-will be rescheduled sometime in November. The rest of the band will still travel to Toronto for scheduled press and promotional activity. Jet’s tour will resume Tuesday, October 3rd in Los Angeles, where the band is scheduled to perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. “Shine On,” Jet’s much-anticipated follow-up to 2003’s RIAA platinum-plus debut, “Get Born,” is set to land in stores on October 3rd.
A band statment notes: “In Australia, we say, ‘I am absolutely gutted’, when the gravity of the situation is overwhelming. After all the work we’ve done on ‘Shine On’ and on making this tour something special, all of us are very disappointed with the news of Nic’s laryngitis. Canceling shows is not something we take lightly at all. We had to make the tough decision this afternoon to cancel shows in both Philadelphia and Toronto-two cities we have played and loved playing in on numerous occasions. We promise to make these shows up as soon as Nic is recovered and we’re back on the East Coast. Once again, our sincerest apologies to all of our fans. When we return, it will of course be with a vengeance.” -Chris Cester, Nic Cester, Mark Wilson, Cameron Muncey and Stevie Hesketh

Disco Biscuits Release Limited Edition Live Album
The Disco Biscuits and Diamond Riggs Records newest live release, Rocket 3, is the entire third set of the Biscuits 2004 New Years Eve performance in New York City. Highly regarded by both the fans and the band alike, this limited-edition three song collection is as much a nod to the past as it is a glimpse into the future. Featuring an awe-inspiring 30 minute version of “Magellan” and a “Frog Legs” that segues nicely into the second half of “Crickets”, this CD is most certainly all about the improvisation. As a bonus, the “Hope” encore is included on the CD.
These tracks, originally considered for release on the April 2006 double live album The Wind at Four to Fly (Diamond Riggs Records / SCI Fidelity) were moved to the cutting room floor when it was decided that a 70 minute 2 and a 1/2 song CD would not be well received at retail. However, the CD has received new life as a result of the many requests from Disco Biscuits fans that this be released in the crystal clear quality that can be expected of all Diamond Riggs live CD’s.
The band has decided to answer that call as a show of fan appreciation. Though the official release date in stores is November 14th, the CD will be available through a pre-order on www.discobiscuits.com and as well at all of the shows on Fall Tour, starting with the Halloween Bash at the Orpheum in Boston.
All shows from the forthcoming tour will be available for sale as downloads a few days after the show at livedownloads.com/bisco

Wolfmother Cuts U.S. Tour Short
Wolfmother has cut short its current U.S. tour after bassist/keyboardist Chris Ross’ partner gave birth a month early to a son in Sydney. The band played in Pittsburgh on Friday and at the Virgin Festival in Baltimore on Saturday (Sept. 23), forcing Ross to endure a 23-hour flight back to Australia on short notice.
The turn of events has necessitated the postponement of a Virgin Records in-store today in Chicago as well as a show on Thursday in Hollywood, which will be made up on Dec. 12. A Friday appearance in San Diego will not be rescheduled; refunds are available from points of purchase. Also scrapped is a Saturday set at the Download Festival at Shoreline Amphitheatre outside San Francisco.
Wolfmother had already planned to spend October at home in Australia before resuming North American roadwork Nov. 21 in Philadelphia. That tour will be preceded by a brief European run earlier in the month.

Ray LaMontagne Adds New Tour Dates
Two months after dropping off a co-headlining tour with Guster, Ray LaMontagne has announced a new round of theatre concerts.
LaMontagne will travel the U.S. for more than five weeks starting November 9 at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. He’ll head up the coast, making a single Canadian stop in Vancouver, and then cover the Midwest, South and East Coast.
The tour will wrap December 18 at a different Orpheum Theatre – in Boston.
Two concerts at London’s Union Chapel are scheduled prior to the U.S. tour, and LaMontagne will be back in the U.K. for a lengthy tour in January and February.
The Maine-based musician released a new album, Till The Sun Turns Black, in late August. The disc is the follow-up to his 2004 debut, Trouble.
LaMontagne toured with Guster for several weeks this summer but announced in late July that he would not be on board for the second leg, due to “unforeseen conflicts in his schedule.”
