20 Years Ago Today – The Hold Steady Release Debut Album ‘Almost Killed Me’

20 years ago today (3/16//04), The Hold Steady released their debut studio album Almost Killed Me. Formed four years following the break-up of lead singer/lyricist Craig Finn and guitarist TAd Kubler’s former band, Lifter Puller, The Minneapolis artists would soon relocate to Brooklyn and their debut album set off a series of renowned records that told of Finn’s stories of fictional characters with biographical themes. Punchy power chords, story-telling vocals, and bar band charisma would define The Hold Steady on Almost Killed Me as the band would broaden their sound with their follow-up Separation Sunday in 2005.
