25 years ago today (3/24/98), Drive-By Truckers released their debut album Gangstabilly. Don’t mind, the crude album cover image, this wasn’t Uncle Kracker music- but instead the beginnings of one of the greatest story-telling bands of our time. Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley of course are the only band members from Gangstabilly still with the current incarnation of DBT, yet the Hood speaks candidly about the album on the band’s website -“[Gangstabilly is] the most country of any of our albums.” He goes on to admit that the record is “not our best album, but lots of fun and more than a little hint of the better things to come.” Check out “The Living Bubba” off the album – one that Hood considers one of the best he ever wrote.
