25 years ago today (10/4/96), Van Halen announces that former Extreme lead singer Gary Cherone was chosen as the new lead singer of the group, replacing Sammy Hagar. This was the third lead singer for the band following hugely commercially successful eras for both Hagar and David Lee Roth, which cemented the band as one of rock’s most influential and popular hard rock bands ever. The Cherone sang Van Halen only released one album, 1998’s Van Halen III which was received poorly and consistently ranks last in their discography.
