40 years ago today (10/5/81), Depeche Mode released their debut studio LP Speak & Spell – the band’s only album with Vince Clark who would later go onto form Erasure. While the band had found themselves in a crowded synth-rock landscape at the time, Depeche Mode would use this LP as a launching pad towards a career that has enabled them to persevere and succeed through decades as a relevant arena act unlike many of their past contemporaries.
