30 years ago today (5/25/96), Bradley Nowell — the charismatic frontman of Sublime — died from a heroin overdose at just 28 years old in San Francisco, California. Tragically, his death came only weeks before the release of Sublime’s self-titled major-label debut, the record that would turn the band into unlikely icons. Packed with songs that became impossible to escape in the late ‘90s, the album eventually went five times platinum and helped define an entire era of alternative radio. Alongside “What I Got,” the record produced enduring posthumous hits like “Santeria,” “Doin’ Time,” “Wrong Way,” and “April 29, 1992 (Miami),” inspiring countless bands that tried to capture Sublime’s laid-back fusion of punk, reggae, ska, and hip-hop. Nowell’s son Jakob is now the lead singer of Sublime, regaining some of that “90’s Dalmation” flair. Watch Sublime with Bradley Nowell in this live compilation from 1994-1996.
