35 Years Ago Today: Aretha Franklin Goes To #1 On R&B Charts With “Freeway of Love”

Even the greatest artists of our time had their significant ’80s moment: McCartney, Dylan and Springsteen. Count the great Aretha Franklin up there who went to number 1 on the Billboard R&B chart with the 80’s drenched “Freeway of Love” 35 years ago today  (8/3/85). Off her thirtieth studio album Who’s Zoomin’ Who? (1985), “Freeway of Love” song features a notable contribution from Clarence Clemons on saxophone. The song’s music video was filmed entirely in the Detroit area, and received significant MTV airplay. “Freeway of Love” earned Franklin her 12th Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Let’s revisit that love it or hate it video…. but you gotta admit it is pretty good…
