35 years ago today (9/25/80), Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham died of asphyxiation in his sleep after having consumed “40 measures of vodka.” Following Bonham’s death a planned North American tour was cancelled and the remaining members decided to disband. A 12/4/80 press statement stated that, “We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend, and the deep sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were”. The statement was signed simply “Led Zeppelin.” Check out this 25 minute drum solo from a 1977 tour stop in Seattle.
