LISTEN: The Cast-Iron Canaries Evoke Glam Rock Bravado On “All Dolled Up”

Flashback to the Bay Area music scene of 1993 when a young, wildly talented, and curiously dressed group of kids from Santa Cruz might have just had a shot at having their names etched into the alt-punk history books. The Cast-Iron Canaries were their name and unless you lived in the Bay Area in the early nineties, you’ve most likely never heard of them. Their only known recording was a 4-song EP ‘Propagaga’. The master tapes were sadly believed to be lost forever until being recently unearthed by producer/engineer Jonathan Burnside.

Sludgey punk riffs and glam rock bravado collide on this blazing reissue from 90’s Bay area punk rockers Cast Iron Canaries. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of their EP Propagaga, “All Dolled Up”, is a surprise glimpse into a rowdy time capsule most never knew existed. Whether or not the world ends up finding out about it is yet to be seen, but thankfully the recordings are now out there waiting to be rediscovered.

“All Dolled Up” was written in a wild flurry. Its lyrics are acted out in real-time in a way that’s maybe both fun and a little dangerous. We wanted to put the listener in the song in a direct way. We weren’t a political band, but this is one of our songs that definitely has it’s queer or feminist-friendly leanings, and I wrote the chorus “I’m pretty, I’m pretty, I’m pretty for you” partly as a fun little snub at gender,” says the band.
