Artist & Title: Gene Ween – Birthday Boy, Baby Bitch
Date & Venue: 2009-05-09 – The Walnut Room, Denver CO
Taper & Show Download: Eric Foelske
Last week, I let you in on my goal of using unique artists for as long as I can with this piece. Well, I’m already stretching things a little bit, but I think it’s OK. I have previously used the Gene Ween Band, but this is Gener solo – TOTALLY different. Anyway, I really like this 1-2 combo of songs as they are both well constructed tunes and have similar subject matter. There is a line in Baby Bitch, “Wrote Birthday Boy for you babe”. He’s got two more solo gigs on the books in June.

God Street Wednesday: Awesome Indeed
I started posting God Street Wednesday columns back in January with the hopes of rekindling some interest in one of my favorite bands of all-time. Since that time I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with or talking to a few of the band members, some of their crew and plenty of other Winos.

These are exciting times for the GSW community as a mini-run of Wine-related shows kicked off last Saturday in Morrisville, PA at the Awesometown Festival where the Lo Faber Band performed.
On May 23, GSW guitar heroes Lo Faber and Aaron Maxwell will team up for the first time in years to play a few tunes both by themselves and with Echofission at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ.
But it all started Last Saturday as I headed across New Jersey – God’s Country – on I-195 to make my way to the little festival that could called Awesometown. From the minute I arrived on site until the minute I left I had as good a time as one could have legally in this country. Not only was the Lo Faber Band set off-the-hook but the other bands, vibe and surroundings were all amazing. I can’t speak highly enough of the job the promoters of this event did, but I’ll certainly try.

If you grew up as a rock fan in the New York City area then you’ve probably heard the voice of legendary DJ Dennis Elsas during his 25 year stint on WNEW or from his continuing work on both WFUV and XM/Sirius over the past few years. Elsas has seen and heard it all since […]
Intermezzo: New Zappa Singer & Phish Quiz
With three days to go before Zappa Plays Zappa starts a three month tour that will take them to Europe and back they have finally settled on a new lead singer to replace the flaky Ray White. Dweezil Zappa shares the amusing story of how Ben Thomas won the gig on the ZPZ Tour Blog. […]
The Black Crowes: Warpaint Live
Chris and Rich Robinson revitalized the Black Crowes in 2008 by en-listing two new members who then participated in the recording of inspired original material on the band’s first studio set in seven years Warpaint. The extensive touring that followed, from which this double live CD is taken, finds the quintet even further invigorated…and invigorating to hear.

Rubblebucket Orchestra
In case you haven’t heard ‘em yet, Rubblebucket Orchestra aren’t the straight-forward funk ensemble that their name might suggest. Instead they are a vivid ten-piece afrobeat/rock band led by trumpeter Alex Toth and fronted by the alluring vocals of Kalmia Traver; both members of reggae band John Brown's Body.

Cover Wars: Can’t You Hear Me Knocking
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking is a bangin’ tune off of the 1971 album Sticky Fingers. The song didn’t really get into the live rotation until the Forty Licks tour. Check out this excerpt from According To The Rolling Stones about the song selection process for that tour and how Keith supposedly thought a previous live attempt at the song was a total trainwreck. The middle Santana-flavored-section just begs for jambands to cover this song.

Checking in on last week’s Ballad Of Curtis Loew edition, Phish has emerged victorious. Hopefully this means it comes off the shelf. Hey, it could happen, it worked for A Day In The Life.
