35 years ago today (9/1/81), Philly duo Hall & Oates upped the ante with their 10th studio album Private Eyes. Although their prior album Voices (1980) contained hits “Kiss on My List” and “You Make My Dreams,” Private Eyes included two #1 hits—the title track, “Private Eyes” and “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)”, as well as the top ten hit “Did It in a Minute”. Hall & Oates became one of the faces of the early MTV generation with their playful band videos and the tall blonde lead vs the short moustached counterpart. Check Private Eyes’ strongest song, where the duo make like Steely Dan and create an undeniable bass line sampled by many in hip hop: I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do) live in ’83.
